The proper number of local shows
« on: May 10, 2015, 11:00:01 AM »
I've long subscribed to the notion that the best way to promote music is to perform it live but I was wondering what the proper amount of local shows is. I know there has to be some sweet spot between too much and too little. Doing either too little or too much can really hurt a band. If you play too little starting out, nobody really finds out who you are and you risk getting the reputation of being someone who isn't serious about music. If you play too much, you can get burned out and your shows stop being must-see events which can kill your draw as a performing act.

My guess is it's probably best to play 1-2 shows a month locally unless you see that there's a market for more. There are definitely bands that get away with playing every week but people have to really want you to do that for it to work. Once or twice a month still gives you time to work on new stuff between shows which can lower the chances of burn out.

There are local bands who play regularly to get famous and there are bands who play to get more money and a bigger fan base.
I think that a popular band shouldn't doo a lot of tours, they may lose that feeling of "uniqueness".

A few bands in my area that have been gaining traction and moderate success usually play 2-3 shows a month, usually at two or more venues.  They also do mini-tours that last about a weekend where they play 1-2 shows a day.  Right now they have a residency where they play about 4 shows this month at a single venue along with other shows they might have booked elsewhere.

I wonder how well that residency will work out for them. There used to be an up and coming band here that scored a residency on Thursday nights for awhile and it just killed their draw. People got tired of seeing them. They used to be able to pack out a venue but their shows at the end of the residency were dead. I'm still not sure how many local shows to play a month but I did figure out that it's good to have multiple booked at a time. For whatever reason, people pay a lot more attention when a band announces a string of shows than just one or two. The answer is probably also based on how big your area is. In a major city, you could probably get away playing weekly because you might be hitting up different crowds whereas in a smaller place, you're only drawing from the same group of people every time so playing less is probably a better idea.
