Best Type of Microphone for Rap Vocals?
« on: May 19, 2013, 08:11:58 PM »
I'm mainly going to be recording hiphop artists / rappers and want to know which types of microphones perform better for these types of vocalists? I've heard that Condenser mics are somewhat too sensitive for the type of energy levels rappers would have and the quick changes of energy could cause clipping, etc...
From my understanding dynamics would be the most forgiving for bad recording technique and also respond better to quick changes and bursts of "sound" from rappers, plus it's not like they're singing and all the nuances are real important that are better picked up by condensers.
My understanding of microphones is pretty well limited so hopefully ya'll can help me out here.

I would use a large diaphragm condensser for almost any vocal.  Dynamic is ok, but is really only necessary for live performances.  If you're recording out of your house or something or the studio, a condenser is way better.  Check out my site there lots of info on microphones athomemusicproduction.com.  Also don't forget about compression afterwards.

Good luck!

I like the dynamic microphone the best. Someone siad earlier that it is good for live peformances and it is. I use to be in a band with a few of my friends and we use to do live performances at different places and the dynamic microphone really enhanced the quality of our performances. The sound was awesome and the overall level of our performances was at a high level. I also like this microphone because it is relitively cheap. The microphone also does not get moist. There are just so many benefits to it.

I'd definitely agree with dynamics rather than a condenser if you want more of a "live" sound. But other than that, I think that most studio vocals would need to be recorded using a condenser regardless to pick up the sensitivities of the vocal.

If it was live and I was wanting a live sound, then i'd definitely use a dynamic mic.

It doesn't really matter I feel like. I would only be particular when it comes to mics for singers.

Yeah the best mic for any vocal application really depends on the vocalist, and the engineer - and what the project is!
